RECITING OUR BASIC BELIEFS
As the last act in the Liturgy of the Book we recite together the basic beliefs of the Christian church over the centuries. These beliefs are embodied in the Nicene Creed, adopted at the Council of Nicea in 325. This Creed sets forth our basic affirmations and boundaries. A Christian may believe more than is in the Creed, but not less.

Other creeds have been written, and they have standing with us. For example, the Apostles' Creed, the Baptismal creed of Rome, and the Athanasian Creed, a Spanish definition of the Trinity.
But the Nicene Creed is the one we use in the Eucharist because it is the ecumenical creed and is most appropriate for the ecumenical sacrament. No other creed has been accepted in the same way by a general church council.
