a welcome beside the uncaring rush of traffic."

IN BRIEF...

Diocesan Convention is scheduled for the Riverside Convention Center, December 6-7. Gretchen Creamer is preparing a synopsis for what will be discussed and voted upon. Roughly speaking Convention is the Annual Meeting for the Diocese.

Thanksgiving Day is misplaced on the Ordo Kalendar that many of us use. Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 28 at 10:00 AM. Please remember to bring your pledge card to the Thanksgiving Eucharist.

The AIDS Lunch Program that St. Nicholas Church conducts once a month at the USC Health Clinic is in need of some volunteers able to deliver sandwiches, fruit and drinks to the clinic and place them on tables from which the patients can select their lunch. Usually, two people perform this charitable task, though one able-bodied person could accomplish it without much trouble. If you would like to join in this worthwhile cause sponsored by our church, please contact Bob Hudson at 788-4486 or Tony Cummings at 786-7855. Thank you for caring!!

DONATE A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR THE CHILDREN OF HILLSIDES

Dan and Connie Miller will again coordinate the parish gift giving for children of Hillsides Home in Pasadena. Dan, noting the extremely generous support given by parishioners last year to this effort, states that he hopes parishioners will be equally generous this year.

Specific gift items are shown in the childrens wish list provided by Hillsides. This list will be available on the table at the back of the church and in the office, starting November 24. If you have difficulty finding any of the items listed, feel free to substitute any of the currently popular toys or gifts featured in the media.

Hillsides would appreciate receiving all gift deliveries by Monday, December 9, if possible, so that they have time to sort, wrap and shop for any must-have gifts that were not donated. You may leave the gifts unwrapped by the baptismal font or in the church office. Dan will make the deliveries to the home.

For further information about gift giving to Hillsides or about Hillsides itself, call Dan and Connie Miller at 818-990-3918 or 213-922-5187.

LATIN HERITAGE

Matthew Sawyer spoke with humor, verve and clarity. He reminded us why Latin is important: it lets us hear classical history as spoken and written in the first place and offers a no-miss way to understand many "English" words (e.g. fabulous, auditorium, magnanimous). Hugh Kramer shared food, a display of Roman antiquities and a host of authors who dined in Roman times.

Our November 10 Sunday forum offered a sharing by one of our youth and an outreach to the Valley community. Matthew Sawyer is a student at Crespi Carmelite and Hugh Kramer has a well-known stamp and coin service for collectors.

Thanks to both Forum presenters for their fascinating and good-hearted sharing.

FROM THE SAINT NICHOLAS KITCHEN….

“I want that soup and pork for my Christmas dinner. The family will love them.”

“I expect you to share these recipes in the next Oak Tree”

These are verbatim remarks from one of the All Saints dinners. However, there were many other requests later on. So here are two menu possibilities for Christmas – or any other time. Enjoy!
