MUSIC NOTES "FROM THE LOFT...."
And so the year is coming to an end. It has been one of change and familiarization; reorganization and reconsideration. I’ve had a wonderful time here with the choir and am already looking forward to what lies ahead in the next season.

But before the choir disbands for the summer (full choir will end on June 2, volunteer choir will continue through July), there are a few more important services to consider. Choral Evensong will once again be offered on Trinity Sunday, May 26. The Rev. Susan Russell will officiate and our Rector will preach. Concluding the service will be an organ recital by Nathan B. Ensign, Organist and Choirmaster at St. Paul in the Desert, Palm Springs. It promises to be a wonderfully exciting concert, using the themes of Pentecost as its conception. I hope that you’ll be able to take some time out of your day to attend this musical offering. A reception will follow outside in the courtyard.

The remainder of the choral year is listed at the end of this column. I would like to draw your attention to a few more items. On June 23, the choir will be present for the visitation of Bishop Carranza, Bishop of Mexico. There will be a choral mass offered that day as well as a Marian motet for the dedication of the Walsingham shrine.

On July 14, the choir will come together one more time, both for the 10:00 AM morning mass and Choral Evensong at 4:00 PM. This is part of the Celebration 2002 event and will emphasize the English contribution to the sacred choral repertoire.

Again, it’s been an engaging year for me and I hope that you’ll avail yourself of the musical opportunities remaining through the year.

Philip Smith celebrated his last Sunday as Saint Nicholas' Director of Music on August 26th. A farewell celebration in the Parish Hall gave us a chance to say goodbye and tell Phil how much he has meant to us. Phil will be Director of Music at Wilshire United Methodist Church. We will miss him and wish him all the best.
