CELEBRATION 2002

Everyone knows that there was enormous reaction to the horrors of September ll. You may not know that part of that reaction was church services all over Europe. By the afternoon of September ll, I was aware that the Spanish bishops had all ordered Requiem Masses that very day. Later, back in London, I noted the huge service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, the “Church of the British Empire.”

Queen Elizabeth II rushed to London from her summer vacation to attend the service at St. Paul’s. She joined in singing the American national anthem. She wept. She expressed great solidarity with our agony.

Now the Queen approaches a very different event. This is the fiftieth anniversary of her coronation. This event is being honored in many countries. On the basis of September ll, the Vestry has joined me in creating our own response to both the Queen’s concern and her remarkable endurance as a leader and symbol.

SUMMER CELEBRATION 2002 will be an American salute to a British event.

It will be a very happy time. It will be an important parish fund-raiser. It will be something for you.

  • Friday, July l2 – gala dinner in the Parish Hall as the main fund-raiser event – $40 per adult (special $5 tickets for children under l8) – jazz combo to provide music and mood.

  • Saturday, July l3 – fun in the garden leading up to a special luncheon and program by the Choir of the Ebell Club of Los Angeles (tickets will be sold; please contact Ann Bloxsom).

  • Sunday, July l4 – parish buffet following both the 8 and l0:00 Eucharist; in the afternoon, a Festival of English Music in the context of traditional Evensong (4:00).

Our goals include support of the parish budget, enjoyment of Anglican heritage, participation in the thanksgiving of an allied nation, and continued outreach through all reasonable efforts.

Buy tickets, sell tickets. SUMMER CELEBRATION 2002 needs you – and all those that you can interest or invite.

VISITATION OF BISHOP CARRANZA

“Why?”

This was a serious question from a serious person. I hope that my response was equally serious. “Because he has an important Christian message to share.”

The “He” in question is Sergio Carranza, the Rt. Rev Sergio Carranza, Anglican Bishop of Mexico City. Bishop Carranza leads the 10,000 members of the Anglican Church in Mexico City. His area of jurisdiction is part of the Anglican Church of Mexico. At present there are thirteen Anglican churches in Mexico City. The Anglican Communion is a world-wide fellowship of churches related to the Church of England with the Episcopal Church as the representative in the United States.

Bishop Carranza will be the guest of St. Nicholas June 22 and 23. His visit will include meetings with Valley clergy, a teaching day in the parish, and celebration of the Eucharist at 8:00 and 10:00 on Sunday, June 23.

Judy Borden, Bob Hudson, Susan Hiscock, Dan Miller and I all met Bishop Carranza when he blessed our icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In the months since then, his deep spirituality continues to encourage me. His way of sharing Anglican insights from another angle has been very helpful.

When Bishop Carranza visits us, his topic will be “The Episcopal Church in Mexico?!” His presentation will be in our Lenten format with dinner and fellowship time in the church itself. I mention all of this early so that busy calendars can be marked to include what is a very important guest event.

Saturday, June 22 beginning at 5:00 p.m.—make a commitment to discover through the leadership of our guest bishop. JEF†

MUSIC NOTES "FROM THE LOFT...."
And so the year is coming to an end. It has been one of change and familiarization; reorganization and reconsideration. I’ve had a wonderful time here with the choir and am already looking forward to what lies ahead in the next season.

But before the choir disbands for the summer (full choir will end on June 2, volunteer choir will continue through July), there are a few more important services to consider. Choral Evensong will once again be offered on Trinity Sunday, May 26. The Rev. Susan Russell will officiate and our Rector will preach. Concluding the service will be an organ recital by Nathan B. Ensign, Organist and Choirmaster at St. Paul in the Desert, Palm Springs. It promises to be a wonderfully exciting concert, using the themes of Pentecost as its conception. I hope that you’ll be able to take some time out of your day to attend this musical offering. A reception will follow outside in the courtyard.

The remainder of the choral year is listed at the end of this column. I would like to draw your attention to a few more items. On June 23, the choir will be present for the visitation of Bishop Carranza, Bishop of Mexico. There will be a choral mass offered that day as well as a Marian motet for the dedication of the Walsingham shrine.

On July 14, the choir will come together one more time, both for the 10:00 AM morning mass and Choral Evensong at 4:00 PM. This is part of the Celebration 2002 event and will emphasize the English contribution to the sacred choral repertoire.

Again, it’s been an engaging year for me and I hope that you’ll avail yourself of the musical opportunities remaining through the year.

Philip Smith celebrated his last Sunday as Saint Nicholas' Director of Music on August 26th. A farewell celebration in the Parish Hall gave us a chance to say goodbye and tell Phil how much he has meant to us. Phil will be Director of Music at Wilshire United Methodist Church. We will miss him and wish him all the best.
