VISITATION OF BISHOP CARRANZA

“Why?”

This was a serious question from a serious person. I hope that my response was equally serious. “Because he has an important Christian message to share.”

The “He” in question is Sergio Carranza, the Rt. Rev Sergio Carranza, Anglican Bishop of Mexico City. He will be the guest of St. Nicholas in June. His visit will include meetings with Valley clergy, a teaching day in the parish, and celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday, June 23.

Judy Borden, Bob Hudson, Susan Hiscock, Dan Miller and I all met Bishop Carranza when he blessed our icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In the months since then, his deep spirituality continues to encourage me. His way of sharing Anglican insights from another angle has been very helpful.

When Bishop Carranza visits us, his topic will be “The Episcopal Church in Mexico?!” His presentation will be in our Lenten format with dinner and fellowship time in the church itself. I mention all of this early so that busy calendars can be marked to include what is a very important guest event.

Saturday, June 22 beginning at 5:00 p.m.—make a commitment to discover through the leadership of our guest bishop. JEF†

MUSIC NOTES "FROM THE LOFT...."
Now that Holy Week and Easter are behind us, I think it is a perfect time to reflect upon the commitment and dedication of the musicians to the program at St. Nicholas.

Holy Week is the most sacred and intensely spiritual time of the Church Year. It is also the most demanding both in terms of time and energy. In the course of the octave between Palm Sunday and Easter Day, the Parish Choir sang for five masses with one rehearsal in between. Because of the solemnity of the octave, the music load increased dramatically from the usual Sunday fare. I am thrilled with the choir’s response to the challenge of the calendar and, if you don’t quite realize it yet, want bring home the nature of what was accomplished.

A wide range of musical styles requiring differing attitudes to musical performance from high renaissance polyphony, through the baroque, classic and romantic common practice periods to contemporary musical language accompanied the octave In each and every circumstance, the choir performed in a musical and consistently excellent manner. I am very proud of our accomplishments here and want to share that enthusiasm with you. Every week you hear the choir and may become complacent with the gift that has been given this parish. Well, I’m here to shake you up a bit. If you compare notes with friends and colleagues who attend other parishes, I think you’ll begin to see the complexity and diversity of what was offered here for Holy Week. And how many people in this diocese can say that they heard a Mozart Missa Brevis with strings within the context of Easter Day Mass? Rejoice!!

I’m not here to build my own pedestal; nothing would come of the highest designs without the full cooperation, commitment and talent of the wonderful collection of people who make up our Parish Choir. What I am here to say is, please, take a moment to assess the musical offerings here and then say “thank you”……to the choir members themselves!

Erik Goldstrom

Philip Smith celebrated his last Sunday as Saint Nicholas' Director of Music on August 26th. A farewell celebration in the Parish Hall gave us a chance to say goodbye and tell Phil how much he has meant to us. Phil will be Director of Music at Wilshire United Methodist Church. We will miss him and wish him all the best.
